Guide, tips & details

About this tool

This US Sales Tax Calculator turns a price into sales tax and a total, or pulls the tax back out of an amount you already paid. It covers California, Texas, Florida, New York, and Illinois. Each state shows the 2026 statewide rate and the Tax Foundation average of state plus local tax, so a typical city total sits next to the statewide minimum. If you know the rate printed for your city, type that in instead. The math runs in your browser. A real receipt can differ because city and county rates change, and some goods such as groceries or clothing are taxed at a different rate.

How to use

  1. 1

    Enter the amount

Use the price before tax, or switch to “Price includes tax” if you only have the receipt total.

  2. 2

    Choose the state and rate

Typical city uses the average local add-on. Statewide only uses the state rate. My city rate lets you type the percent from your local table.

  3. 3

    Read the receipt

The card shows the price, the sales tax, and the total. The other rate is listed underneath.

Features

  • 2026 statewide sales tax for California, Texas, Florida, New York, and Illinois
  • Typical combined rate that includes the state’s average local tax
  • Add tax to a price, or remove tax from a total you already paid
  • A custom rate when you know the city or county percent
  • Runs in the browser — the price is not uploaded

Limitations

  • •Typical city rate is a statewide average of local tax, not the rate for one city or county.
  • •Does not apply special rates for groceries, clothing, medicine, or other exempt or reduced items.
  • •Not a substitute for a store’s tax lookup or a sales-tax return.

Tips & common mistakes

  • •A California price of $49.99 is about $4.51 in tax at the 9.03% typical combined rate, and about $3.62 at the 7.25% statewide rate.
  • •New York’s state rate is 4%, but local tax is high, so the typical combined rate is 8.54%.
  • •Texas local tax is capped, so most receipts land close to 8.25% even though the state rate is 6.25%.
  • •Type your city’s rate when the receipt has to match a specific store. The typical rate is an average, not that store.

How sales tax is calculated

Tax is the price times the rate, rounded to the nearest cent. When the amount already includes tax, the price is the total divided by one plus the rate.

Tax = Price × rate. Total = Price + tax. Price before tax = Total ÷ (1 + rate).
  • •Statewide rate is the state sales tax only
  • •Typical city rate is the state rate plus that state’s average local sales tax for 2026
  • •A custom rate replaces both and is still rounded to the nearest cent
